The Premier Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Secures the Top Position.

On the surface, this work may look closer to a difficult university challenge than a new popular music project by a musician who just had a previous single was a collaboration with a global pop icon. Split into four distinct movements and performed in thirteen tongues, we have a breathtaking orchestral-influenced opus exploring female mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal change, frequently via the lens of various female saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a theme treated with grounded openness on another major 2025 album—soars heavenward on this record, supported by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from an award-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone renders the work of other pop stars look rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

The fact that Lux manages to transcend dry academic chin-stroking feels nothing short of miraculous, and full praise going to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to fuse historical sounds with modern styles, the scale are far higher here, with the tightrope walk more pronounced. What really elevates this fourth release, beyond its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the legendary Björk at her height, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you into its tornado. When she's tearing hearts in two, you still want to be right there through the journey.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This playful spirit shines clearly on a stunning piano-led ballad about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated string surge thuds down like cartoonish force. The track immediately shifts to the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist herself.

"The charm with Lux is that the listener rarely exactly understand—or even wish to know—where you is going to next."

Nearly every song finishes in a totally distinct point from where it began. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame with a featherlight symphony only to collapsing in digital chaos. Another, a song echoing her previous trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, featuring prowling beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften its rough corners.

The Bridge Between Experiment & Accessibility

A key achievement on the album involves straddling the gap of radical experimentation and mainstream appeal. This is little surprise that the album has become her first release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: its heart contains a suite of truly catchy pop songs. A song performed entirely in the English language builds on a refrain that seems to gather increasingly nagging melodies while it spirals skyward. That trick is repeated by a different expansive track that grows and constricts, weaving layered tunes as a complex tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms via its jaunty, theatrical flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural honesty of other breakup songs, lambasting an ex- partner described as an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've won the trophy of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist level, a hungry grasp for capital-A Art in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in excess. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. Where some major releases of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux is a lavish banquet at which the guests at it, some tipsy on sacred drink, flit from conversations about ancient saints, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless men. In essence, it's a modern-day theatrical production from pop's most endlessly inventive visionary.
